LINES ON PAPER Artist Bio - Shel Dorf
EARLY STUFF: At age five, Shel saw a reprint book of "Katzenjammer Kids" and got into the funnies for life! At age ten, he began clipping and saving them. The hobby lasted for 50 years. Collections and files donated to Ohio State University (available to scholars). Yes!

WORK IN THE BIZ: Art department - Detroit Free Press (age 19) freelance commercial art; lettered "Steve Canyon" (1975--1988) for my hero, Milton Caniff, a man of wisdom and good character; designed and produced the Rueben Award Winner series of comic strip reprint books (1985--1989) and hope to do more; Still available for lettering jobs; currently developing presentations; doing cartoonist interviews; (since 1970); creating new comic strips; writing copy.

SERVICE WORK: Helped Milt coordinate "Cartoonists Against Battered Children" campaign; worked on cartoonists "Careline" project to advertise anti-suicide hotline; drew caricatures of donors at San Diego Blood Bank (since 1988); work with talented youngsters on a one-to-one; I'm an active member at monthly meetings of the Southern California Cartoonists Society (affiliate of N.C.S.); I created the world famous San Diego Comic-Con in 1970. It attracts thousands of fans each year to celebrate the popular arts.

AWARDS: The American Legion Award - Poppy Poster Contest - National Safety Poster Contest (2nd Place) - Excellence In Photography Award - Scholastic Magazine; Inkpot Award -- San Diego Comic-Con; Certificate Of Commendation by Mayor of San Diego; Plaque from comic-con staff on my retirement in 1984; plaque from Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

FAMILY: Mother in nursing home still gives me love. Brother Michael, in Jerusalem give me pride and love. and a family of valued friends!
