Lines On Paper Artist Bio - PAT MORIARITY



In case you want to psychoanalyze the artist (and who wouldn't?), these strange but TRUE facts may or may not help.

Did you know that
Mr. Moriarity:

- was born in the windy city, a product of horny art students?

- is mysteriously disgusted by tuna fish, especially in a can?

- was not only afraid of Mad Magazine as a kid, but looked so much like Alfred E. Neuman, that other kids made fun of him for it?

- was a cub scout, but dropped out a disillusioned Weebeloe? (he never did figure out exactly what a "weebeloe" was, or how to spell it)

- walked beans and detassled corn? and was thankful?

- went to junior high and high school in the town that went "Cold Turkey"? (Norman Lear movie)

- missed going to state finals in the 440 yard dash by one tenth of a second? (it still gets to him)

- bagged groceries? and was courteous?

- had a cushy, big-shot job at a high profile record store for several years until it went bankrupt, then ended up working at Wendy's, carrying 5 gallon buckets of grease to the dumpsters?

- did a photo-collage that appeared in Soul Asylums' very first CD, "Say What you Will, Clarence"?

- is the Iowa State intramural hacky sac champion of 1983? (271 consecutive kicks!)

- got a bachelors degree in graphic design from Iowa State University, but they held his diploma hostage for a year, until he could pay off a short term student loan?

- was a male stripper at Ye Olde Print Shoppe? (darkroom)

- reformatted all the early Replacements lps (graphics) into CD format, back when CDs were just getting popular?

- won the grand prize of the Twin City Readers' very first annual cartoon contest, out of over 300 entries?

- has direct lineage to William Farnum, the silent film actor?

- drew the artwork on the infamous "1-800-meat bags" that David Letterman made fun of on television, back in the eighties?

- created the posters for the famous Minneapolis venue FIRST AVENUE's 20th anniversary?

- will listen to any CD at least once, regardless of the packaging?

- designed and drew the original -Buckman-, the icon for the Big Dollar Store, now a chain in the Midwest?

- once drew Alvin and the Chipmunks for a variety of business slide show presentations?

- is a card carrying member of the SPMC?

- illustrated a variety of portapotty designs for Satellite portable toilets?
shared a house with cartoonists J.R. Williams, R.L. Crabb, and Jeremy Eaton?

- once gave a slightly uncomfortable R. Crumb a hasty ride to the airport in his beat up $800 Datsun?

- worked for five years as an art director for Fantagraphics books? (with two as art director of the Comics Journal)

- was included in Rolling Stone Magazine's Hot List as Hot Cartoonist of '96?

- did the Bill the helpful Pimple cartoons for Jenny McCarthy?

- was approached by a German soft drink company to do a German OK soda rip off, but backed out after OK bombed?

- has one ear that works great, and another that barely works at all? (this could explain a lot!)

- lived to eat Chinese with Bill Griffith?
